Blog 7: Music

I recommend you to listen to this while you're reading ↑↑↑↑↑ Hi everyone! Today I'm going to talk about music. I'm really into music, so it's really hard for me to choose one artist to write about, but lately, I have been listening to a particular musician a lot. Hope you enjoy the reading!

I listen to a lot of old music, but if I think in current music there is an artist that stands out: Robert Glasper. He is an American composer, pianist, and producer that has a jazz rooted discography that blends with hip-hop and soul. I love his work mixing genres but, especially, his intent on doing culturally relevant music and considerating the power of music to communicate even without words. He has recorded albums as a soloist and in groups.

My favorite albums are Collagically Speaking (2018), by a group called R+R=NOW (Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, Christian Scott, Derrick Hodge, Taylor McFerrin, Justin Tyson) that is a jazz reflection on society and culture, and Black Radio 2 (2013), an album filled with tremendous collaborations that celebrate the black culture.

My favorite genres of music are jazz, hip-hop, soul, and Latin American music like folklore, Nueva Canción Chilena, valses, and boleros. As a pianist, this is like my musical DNA. I grew up listening to Latin American music and that is my root. Later in my life, I found the universe of black music and I fell in love with its deepness and riches. My musical expectations are to blend these two worlds in a musical discourse.
